Equipment
|
Computers:
|
The lab has 25 IBM compatible computers. Each computer has a Pentium processor with a 133 MHz
clock speed, super VGA color displays, 1 GB internal hard disks, 1.44 MB 3 1/2" floppy drive,
32 MB RAM, 4X CD-ROM, 16-bit soundcard, and a mouse.
|
|
Network:
|
All computers in the lab are networked using Ethernet cabling, NOVELL Netware Version 4.1, and a
file server located in room 216. The file server is an IBM compatible computer with a Pentium II
300 MHz processor, 36 GB disk storage, 384 MB RAM, and two 12/24X CD-ROM drives. This enables users
to share files and have centralized printing capabilities.
|
|
Printers:
|
There is one line printer in the lab which is connected to every computer via the network. There is
also an HP Laserjet 4000N laser printer connected to every computer via the network and this printer is
now available at no cost to the user. It is however for final copies of papers and posters only, items
such as class notes and other material should be sent to the line printer. If the laser printer is abused,
privileges will be restricted.
|
|
Digitizers:
|
There are 10 Calcomp digitizers in the lab. The digitizers are connected directly to each computer.

File Storage
Users are allowed to store files on either the local hard drive of the computer they are working on, or
the network "Y:" drive. However, at the beginning of each month the local and network drives are deleted of
all files. A tape backup unit is installed in the lab which will allow users to backup important data from
the network as needed before monthly cleaning. Graduate students that have a large storage need
may apply for a user account on the network. This will allow them a permanent password protected storage area
that is backed up every night automatically. FTP access into the Microlab is also available for retrieval of
data files. The hostname is CFWRMicroLab.fw.vt.edu. For more information on user accounts or accessing your data
via FTP, contact Lon Weber in room 216 JCH (laweber@vt.edu).
