NOTE: YOU MUST WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT INDIVIDUALLY
Your job is to analyze whether your company should buy a bank in the Atlanta downtown area. Atlanta is one of the nation's main banking centers and your company wants to participate in that growing market. But you do not want to buy just any bank. There are spatial and economic criteria it must fulfill in order for your company to make a purchase at a particular location. Here are the requirements:
1) The bank must be relatively new because you want to make sure that it has an adequate communication system. Banks established in 1985 or later have communication systems that can be easily upgraded. Thus, the bank must have been established in 1985 or later.
2) The bank must also be within 0.80 (eight-tenths) of a mile from a shopping center, because that will mean that you will have a lot of businesses nearby that could make deposits and use your facilities. Such accessibility is often an important consideration for banks.
3) Of all the banks that meet these criteria, you want the one that has the most rapid rate of deposit growth. To indicate the rate of deposit growth, we can look at a pie chart indicating the deposits made each year during the period 2006, 2007, and 2008. We can see what percentage each year's deposits contributes to the sum of all deposits for the three years. The bank whose pie chart indicates the smallest percentage for the year 2006 and the largest percentage for 2008 would have the most rapid rate of deposit growth.
In addition, it would be beneficial, but not absolutely crucial, for the bank to satisfy the following optional criterion:
1) The average age of the people in the census tract in which the bank is located should preferably be at least middle-aged or older (older than 30), because such people tend to be richer and thus make more bank deposits.
Here is what you need to do to fulfill your assignment:
1) Open up the map of Atlanta that we have been using that has the three layers on it.
2) Add the layers "Shopping_Centers" and "nbank" to the Table of Contents on the left side of the map and display them on the map by making sure that the box to the left of their layer name is checked. Note that we want "nbank", NOT "bank." The layer "nbank" displays only those banks in the downtown area.
3) Display the shopping centers as a triangle (triangle #2) and make sure that the size of the triangles is "20." Use the Symbol Selector dialog box to change the shape and size of the display of the shopping centers.
4) Display the banks as circles (Circle #2) with a size of "10."
5) To display only those banks built 1985 or afterwards, you will need to use the Query Builder in the Layer Properties dialog box. The field that has the information on when a bank was established is called "YEAR_ESTAB." When finished, only those banks built 1985 or afterwards should be displayed. (To make sure you did this correctly, you can use the "Identify" tool to find out information about each bank. If you did this incorrectly, that is, if you are now displaying some banks established before 1985, you need to go back to the Layer Properties dialog box, click on the "Definition Query" tab and remove the query equation, which will remove the changes and which will display all the banks again. Then start over).
6) Display the "average ages" (field name is "AVERAGE_AG") in the census tracts by using the Layer Properties dialog box. In choosing the color scheme to display the five classes, select the "Purple Bright" color ramp..
7) Highlight in cyan those banks that are within 0.80 (eight-tenths) mile of a shopping center by using "Select by Location." (make sure that you have the distance units set to "miles" and not "decimal degrees.")
8) Change the title of the layer "Census Tracts" in the table of contents to "Average Age."
9) Make sure that you can clearly see the shopping centers and banks. If you cannot, change the colors used to represent them.
Now you are ready to answer the following: (Answer these questions on these pages.)
1) How many banks that were established in 1985 or afterwards are within eight-tenths of a mile of a shopping center?
2) What are the names of these banks?
3) What is the "range" of average ages of people living in each of the census tracts in which these banks (that are within eight-tenths of a mile of a shopping center) are located? Use the ranges indicated in the Table of Contents on the left.
Now, you are ready to produce a pie graph map.
When we produce such a map, the color cyan (which was used to show which banks are within eight-tenths of a mile from a shopping center) will display as a circle on top of the pie graphs.
Now, produce a pie graph map showing the percentage contribution of deposits for the banks for the years 2006 (field = "DEPOSITS06"), 2007 (field = "DEPOSITS07"), and 2008 (field = "DEPOSITS08") to the total sum of all deposits for the three years. (Note: if it is hard to distinguish among the three colors in the pie graph, you can change one or more of the colors in the pie graph by clicking on the color and selecting a new color.)
After you have finished, answer the following on these pages:
4) Which bank that is within eight-tenths of a mile of a shopping center has the highest rate of bank deposit growth based on your analysis of the pie graphs? (You will need to look carefully at the pie graphs)
5) For the banks that are within eight-tenths of a mile from a shopping center, what is the relationship between the rate of deposit growth and average age of people in the census tracts? That is, in census tracts with a younger population, do you have a higher or lower rate of bank deposit growth?
Now it is time to produce a professional map to accompany your report.
Prepare a layout of the map that has the following and print the map:
* Change the title from "Atlanta" to "Bank Purchase Analysis."
* The sub-title should be "Atlanta Marketing Division"
* Center the title and subtitle over the center of the map (not over the center of the page you print out) in the layout and use a font size of "72" for the title and "24" for the subtitle.
* Print your name on the map using the ArcMap program. I do not want you to write your name on the map.
* For the legends that appear on the right, make sure the font size is "18."
* The map in the layout should also portray both the average age of people living in the census tracts and the pie graphs.
* The map in the layout should also have a north arrow to the right of the map and a scale bar below the map.
Finally, write a one or two paragraph report on what recommendation you would make to your company concerning whether it should purchase a bank, based on both the requirements and optional consideration. Discuss each requirement and the optional criterion.
