News FlashThe Virginia Geospatial Extension Program helps develop sustainable tourism strategy for part of the Blue Ridge Parkway

A research team from Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business and College of Natural Resources has received a $266,000 grant from the National Park Service and Blue Ridge Heritage Inc. to help develop a sustainable tourism strategy for the Rocky Knob area of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Virginia Geospatial Newsletter is a quarterly publication developed through the Virginia Geospatial Extension Program, in conjunction with the Virginia Geographic Information Network. The purpose of the Virginia Geospatial Newsletter is to highlight innovative geospatial products and services throughout the Commonwealth, and to widely disseminate this information throughout Virginia. News FlashSouthern Virginia Bioenergy Symposium
The purpose of the Southern Virginia Bioenergy Symposium is to provide participants with an introductory knowledge about the growing bioenergy industry, an overview of current land use datasets available for counties in South Central Virginia that can be employed to attract bioenergy facilities, and analysis methodologies that can support the efforts of Southside Virginia's localities to attract a bioenergy plant to the region. The ArcGIS Server 9.2 Workshop offers a detailed look at the ArcGIS platform and capabilities. It will be held at the Montgomery County Administration Bldg, 755 Roanoke St, Suite 2E. The workshop will run from 9am to 1pm.


News FlashNational Hydrography Dataset Applications Workshop
The National Hydrography Dataset Applications workshop will include the availablility and potential uses of NHD within Virginia. It will be held on March 5th, 2008 in Richmond, VA and on March 6th, 2008 in Reston, VA. There is no cost for the workshop but pre-registration is required.


News FlashJoint North American, European, and South American Symposium: Science and Technology Literacy in the 21st Century, May 31st - June 4, 2006. This sypmosium introduces a novel approach to the global exchange of ideas in Science and Technology Education by teachers worldwide. The symposium will be held simultaneously at three sites: Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, USA, University of Nicosia, Nicosia, Cyprus, and Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru, Lima, Peru. News FlashThe City of Waynesboro partnered with Blue Ridge Community College and The Virginia Geospatial Extension Program to develop an implementation plan to bring GIS to every City desktop. As a part of the implementation plan, a matrix was constructed to identify application areas and data needs for the City. You can view this matrix here. NASA FUNDS 2004 WORK FORCE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS NASA has selected 43 consortia in the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program (Space Grant) to receive funding in 2004 for aerospace work force development. A total of $3.75 million is being awarded in response to proposals submitted by the state organizations to NASA's Office of Education in Washington. Awards are being made in two categories: single-state proposals (42 awards) and multi-state proposals (4 awards for a total of 16 states).


VIRGINIA TECH EXTENSION, FORESTRY DEPARTMENT PARTNER WITH VIRGINIA SPACE GRANT CONSORTIUM IN GEOSPATIAL PROGRAM
BLACKSBURG, September 3, 2003, - Virginia Tech and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium have established the Space Grant Geospatial Extension Program in the College of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus. The program will facilitate educational programs and workforce training to help deal with the serious shortfall of professionals and trained specialists who can utilize geospatial technologies at the local, regional, and state levels.
