Virginia in the World: the Geography of Commerce

"Virginia in the World: the Geography of Commerce" is a wall map sponsored by the Office of the Governor and produced in 1997 by the Virginia Department of Economic Development and the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

The central map and several insets illustrate the economic connections that Virginia has with every country of the world. Maps and graphics use a variety of symbols and colors to depict trade with the world: graduated arrows to illustrate the value and export flow to regions and countries; and color-coded bar graphs for types of exports (with destination). A pie chart suggests the importance of visitors to Virginia by the percentage of total from major countries.

Intended primarily to further economic development and international trade, copies are being distributed by the state to middle and high schools throughout Virginia.

The Virginia Geographic Alliance has produced lessons and suggested activities to accompany the map. These materials were distributed with the maps and are also available online.

The map was designed and drafted by Dr. Bernd Kuennecke, Department of Geography, Radford University, with assistance from Dr. Susan Woodward, also of the Radford Geography Department and the Virginia Geographic Alliance. It represents the most recent update of a map originally produced by the Alliance in 1989.
