VIRGINIA
IN THE WORLD:
The Geography of Commerce
Lessons and Suggested Activities for Middle School
Introduction
The
map, "Virginia in the World: The Geography of Commerce"
illustrates the economic connections that Virginia has with every country
of the world through its export trade. The maps and graphics use a variety
of symbols and colors to depict trade with the world: graduated arrows to
illustrate the value and export flow to regions and countries; and color-coded
bar graphs for types of exports (with destination). A pie chart suggests the
importance of visitors to Virginia by the percentage of total from major countries.
The map
and the data represented by the various symbols provide numerous opportunities
for map interpretation.
