GLOSSARY

affiliated:
connected to or associated with and individual, organization, etc.
agriculture:
farming, cultivation of soil, producing crops, raising livestock
arterial:
a main road or course of travel of many branches for high volume travel
cartography:
the art of map making
commerce:
the buying and selling of goods, provision of services
commonwealth:
a state or nation as it was designated in its original constitution
component:
one part of a large group or whole
consumer:
a person who buys or uses goods or services
destination:
the place toward which someone or something is going or is to be sent
economics:
study of how people choose to use scarce resources to satisfy their needs and wants; a study of choice
establishments:
businesses, military organizations, households
equipment:
special things needed for a task, supplies, etc.
fabricated:
invented, manufactured or produced
imports:
goods and services that individuals and businesses in a country purchase from foreign countries
industry:
Any branch of production-especially manufacturing
inland:
away from the coast; locations where trucks, trains, or airplanes meet to exchange goods
international:
between two or more countries/nations
interstate:
between two or more states; the network of U.S. highways connecting the 48 contiguous states
link:
to join together, to connect
machinery:
the working parts of a device used to produce goods or perform work
market:
the place in which or the arrangement by which goods and services are bought and sold
optical:
visual; products or components for cameras, microscopes, etc.
origin:
the beginning, coming into existence or use. Could be the beginning location as e.g., London
overseas:
abroad; from or to countries across the sea, foreign
partnership:
business owned by two or more persons.
port:
a man-made facility for ships, where ships load and unload cargo
port authority:
group that governs/manages ports and their activities
port of call:
a destination for a ship
proportional:
the relationship between ports, things, elements with respect to size, shape, degree, ratio, etc.
region:
an area that may be part of one state/region or may cover several states/nations; its people have similar economic interests
resources:
the things that go into the making of goods and services; natural, human, and capital resources
river port:
a man-made facility for ships located along a river
seaport:
a man-made facility for ships located on a ocean/sea
sea route:
the path or course of travel for a ship or boat
service:
work done for others e.g., education, repair, legal, travel planning
sightseeing:
act of visiting places or things of interest; for pleasure or education
supply:
quantity of goods and services offered at all prices
tourism:
a source of income for a state/country or business based on peoples travel habits/patterns/purchases
transportation:
the work or business of moving passengers or goods
waterborne:
anything transported over water by ship
