VIRGINIA IN THE WORLD: The Geography of Commerce

Lessons and Suggested Activities for Middle School

Extending the Lesson

Download the list of "Foreign Owned Companies in Virginia." Have students write a letter to a foreign owned business in their community to find out why the company is located in Virginia.

Invite a representative of a foreign owned company in your area to speak to students about the goods/services they provide in the community.

Use outside resources such as almanacs, the internet, local offices of the U. S. Department of Commerce and your local chamber of commerce to research Virginia's imports.

Ask students to compile a list of key vocabulary terms used on the "Virginia in the World: The Geography of Commerce" map. Allow them to work in cooperative groups using dictionaries and thesauruses to prepare a glossary of terms for use with the map. Compare this to the glossary provided.

Download the list of "Foreign-Owned Companies in Virginia" and have students locate the foreign-owned businesses in their immediate area (city, county, school district, etc.). Plot these points on a local map.

Ask students to pretend they are travel agents. Plan a trip for a group from a foreign country to visit Virginia. Make a detailed itinerary for their trip.

Provide opportunities for students to research sites in Virginia where tourists might like to visit. What would they do there? What modes of transportation could they use?
