Alliance Activities

Geographic Bee

Turkey: Past and Present

 

Alliances work within four major program areas:

- Curriculum: to improve student achievement in geography by increasing the quality, availability, and application of geography content and instruction.

- Training: To improve student achievement in geography through professional development for teachers in geography content and instruction.

- Outreach: To improve student achievement in geography by increasing public awareness of the value of geographic literacy for all citizens.

- Assessment: To improve student achievement in geography through well-developed and thoughtful assessment mechanisms.

 

The Virginia Geographic Alliance provides:

- Content-oriented short courses by university professors accompanied by models of classroom applications from K-12 teachers

- Workshops and mini-institutes on pedagogy and technology specifically related to the effective teaching of geography.

- Curriculum development for Advanced Placement programs in Geography.

- Alliance Summer Geography Institutes to prepare teachers who return to their schools and teach geographic education techniques to colleagues.

- Coordination and training for classroom and school-wide projects related to national Geography Awareness Week, sponsored each year by the National Geographic Society.

- Statewide and regional newsletters and this web site for the dissemination of information on geography education issues and activities.

- Educational materials, including maps, An Atlas of Virginia, and lesson plans.
