Recent Question

Question:
I just bought 100 acres in Franklin County. The property has pasture land and about 40 acres of mature planted loblolly pine. What is the first thing I should do to find out more about my management options for my property?

Answer:
Excellent question.  The first person you should talk to is your Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) area forester. The VDOF forester can walk your property with you and help you set reasonable goals based on your property and your management objectives. The forester can also develop a forest management plan for your property, or may suggest a consulting forester to assist you. Click here to locate your area forester. Additionally, you can attend forestry educational programs hosted by Virginia Extension, Virginia Department of Forestry, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and many other agencies. Check the Forest Landowner Events Calendar for upcoming natural resource education events. When it comes to managing your forest, knowledge is power.
