Review:
Black gum is tolerant of shade but will grow all straggly and crooked stretching for the light wherever it can be found. When it is open grown it is a strongly pyramidal tree even to the point of recovering after storm damage. In the fall it is one of the first to turn a glowing deep scarlet maroon. One identification characteristic that I use is the branch attachment; it looks like the branch was stabbed straight into the trunk. They are not very easy to transplant and I would recommend using containerized stock from a quality grower.
