Extremely tolerant of shade, hemlock can grow and reproduce under a forest canopy. It offers valuable shade and shelter to wildlife, and it often planted ornamentally due to its versatility and beauty. The future of eastern hemlock as an ornamental and in the wild is in question due to the spread of the hemlock woolly adelgid, an accidentally introduced sap-feeding insect. This impact can be seen locally - many of our hemlocks have already fallen victim to the adelgid. Look for dead stands of hemlock at the Cascades or around Mountain Lake. More Information on hemlock:
