Description: This crown of this beautiful elm is wider than it is tall - in fact, it takes up nearly a quarter of the quad in which it was planted. American elms used to line most streets in the eastern US. (Almost every town has an elm street.) They were planted for the pleasant shade under their widely-arching branches. Dutch elm disease dealt a harsh blow to American elms, killing many and severely limiting their use as an ornamental tree. Most of the stately elms on campus are treated to ensure their survival.
