Description: This tree is one of the largest and most visible trees on campus. Anyone who has trekked across the drillfield should remember this landmark. Although it is not native to this area, this bur oak thrives in its planted location. Bur oak is a very drought-tough tree common to dry uplands, sandy plains, and prairie grasslands. The wood is commercially valuable and acorn production benefits wildlife. Bur oaks are relatively easy to grow and are often used for shade trees, or shelterbelt plantings.
