Stand conditions: This 11 acre stand was growing on old agricultural land in Patrick County, Virginia. A soil profile revealed a dark plow layer with red clay below that. There were very few hardwood stems, indicating that weeds were controlled at stand establishment.

Age: 32

Trees per acre: 155

Total value per acre: $4981*

  • Sawtimber: 112 tons = $4485
  • Chip and Saw: 18 tons = $411
  • Pulpwood: 11 tons (4.3 cords) = $85

Note... this is a much higher yield than average for loblolly pine stands. Very fertile soils and weed control contributed to rapid growth.

Cut it!

* Growth data represented here is based on one prism point sample within the harvested stand. Monetary data is based on 2003 dollars and timber values. Actual payments to landowners are generally 50% of gross payments, but vary widely with distance to mills, terrain, harvest size, etc.
