COLLEGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES REORGANIZATION AND BUDGET CUT EFFECTS

Reorganization:

University reorganization is not entirely complete, but most of the large pieces have been settled. The College of Arts and Sciences will be made into two colleges. The rest, including Natural Resources, will remain as they are although some departments have and may still be moved and some names have changed. Recombination of Natural Resources with Agriculture and Life Sciences was considered earlier, but our name recognition, the national rankings of our Departments, and our teaching and research standing in the University helped maintain our separate status.

Budget Cuts:

Some of our classes have been affected by cuts, but we don't anticipate anything we can't manage. Two required classes in the Fisheries major and Wildlife major have been cancelled for Spring, 2003. Physics 2014, The Physics Around Us, will not be returning. Students can substitute the regular Physics class. Chem 2514, Survey of Organic Chemistry has been cancelled for Spring, 2003, but may be taught again next year. In the meantime, Chem 2535 will substitute.

NR 1114, Introduction to Renewable Natural Resources, has been cancelled for Spring, 2003. This class has served its purpose of introducing freshmen to the many opportunities in Natural Resources, but the cost in money and time is very high. Since most of our freshmen take NR 1114 in the Fall, we don't anticipate difficulty. We will have a substitute course, NR 2984, for Spring with the same purpose but less field work. This will provide a natural resources introduction to students outside Natural Resources who have registered for Spring.

WOOD 2114, Environment, Society, and the Use of Wood, was cancelled for Fall, 2002 (this semester) since no instructor was available to replace Dr. Fred Lamb, the course originator and instructor. Since this is a required class in both options in Wood Science and Forest Products, the WSFP Curriculum Committee will be making substitutions for those students affected by the cancellation. We hope to bring the class back next Fall to accommodate our majors and the many students across the University who enroll for Core Area 7 credit. We will also be working on an on-line version of the class.
