The Garden Club of America strives to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, correspondence and publications, and to restore, improve, and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement. To further these goals, Zone VI of the Garden Club of America has established a fellowship in urban forestry for qualified U.S. students.
This fellowship in Urban Forestry is available to one graduate or advanced undergraduate student studying urban forestry, environmental studies, horticulture, forestry, and related courses of study with a special interest in the urban forest. An award of $4,000 is provided and a recipient may reapply for an additional year.
With this fellowship the Garden Club of America seeks to forward their goal of advancing our knowledge of urban forests and increasing the number of scientists in the field of urban forestry. Zone VI of the Garden Club of America has a history of interest in the health of the urban forest and would like to support young scientists in their undergraduate and graduate studies in this field. The study areas of interest are far reaching, including urban forest management and planning as well as tree biology issues relating to our urban forests.
Applications are reviewed by a selection committee at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University composed of practicing urban forestry scientists. The committee forwards the application of the selected candidate to the Garden Club of America for final endorsement.
Eligibility The fellowship is open to both advanced undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental studies or a closely related field at any 4-year college or university degree program in the United States .
