What does this map and data table mean?

The source of the land use mapping is the National Land Cover Datum from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Geological Survey made from satellite images taken around 1992 and is available to the general public. The data has been simplified into eight general types of land use: water, residential, commercial, barren, transitional, agricultural, and wetland.

The data table is a summary of land use types within the county and/or watershed. Values are expressed as percentages of the total amount of land in the county and/or watershed. The section entitled "within 60m of a stream" summarizes the types of land use within 60 m of the edge of any stream or river. The data for your county is compared to averages for the entire Shenandoah/Potomac watershed and the entire state.

For more detailed information about the data and its compilation see: "How GIS is used for this website."
