Waxmyrtles and Bayberries

Waxmyrtles and bayberries are found mainly near the coast but extend inland quite a few miles.  Many birds eat the waxy-coated fruit and its seed (nutlet).  Because of its dense, shiny, evergreen foliage, Myrica shrubs have value as ornamentals.  In colonial times the fruits were used in making candles.
