Notes: This tree stands over "The Reeds", an old plantation site in Caroline Co. This parcel of land was one of the first grants in Caroline Co. and was given by the King of England in 1664. The tree is over 200" in circumference. It is surrounded by old graves of the Corbin Family. This land was once owned by Richard Corbin, last acting Royal Governor of Virginia, who fled to England in the 1770's. Corbin was made Governor by Lord Dunmore, who fled himself shortly before, leaving Corbin to the mercy of disgruntled colonists. |
