Celebrating Virginia's Big Trees

Supporters of the 4-H Big Tree Program are thrilled that it will be the focus of this year's National 4-H Week celebration! Youth throughout Virginia are invited to join the fun. Here are the details:

Who Can Participate?

The 4-H Big Tree program is designed for any youth between the ages 9-19 who live in Virginia. If you are not currently in 4-H, we suggest you contact your local Extension Agent and ask about a club near you. If there is no club near you, ask about starting one yourself!

When Can I Participate?

Although National 4-H Week is celebrated Oct 1-7, 2000, searching for big trees can be done anytime. The 4-H Big Tree Web site is maintained year-round, and updated monthly.

How Do I Participate?

Participation is simple. All you have to do is find a big tree, identify it, measure it's circumference, and then nominate it.

Why Should I Participate?

The primary purpose of conducting a big tree search is to foster an appreciation for natural resources. The 4-H big tree search also teaches you how to identify and measure trees, two of the most important forestry career skills. Forestry is important to the economy and ecology of Virginia. Virginia forest industries are the State's largest manufacturing employer, and timber is Virginia's most valuable agricultural crop. Virginia is 63% forested, adding beauty to our landscape and conserving our natural resources.

Will There Be Prizes?

Everyone who nominates a tree will be recognized on the 4-H Big Tree List. Some counties have started including big tree classes in their county fairs. Check with your local Extension Agent to find out if your county has prizes.

Who Do I Contact For More Information?

Your local 4-H Extension Agent will be coordinating the National 4-H Week celebration in your county. Consult the on-line directory of local Extension Offices.
