Notes: Following Governor Swanson's Proclamation, Virginia Estelle Randolph organized the first Arbor Day ceremonies to be held at a black school in Virginia on Monday, March 30, 1908. Miss Randolph at the time was the principal of the Mountain Road School in Henrico County. The program included planting 12 sycamores on the school grounds in honor of the twelve Apostles and numerous shrubs and roses. The sycamores were purchases by Miss Randolph with her own funds. Ten of the original twelve trees survive. Two trees were removed several years ago during remodeling of the traffic patterns at the school. |
