Notes: Our tree is the "Round Tree" for which our subdivision was named in 1960, Roundtree. Other surrounding items were named for this tree: Roundtree Road, Roundtree Estates, and adjoining Roundtree Park. The hill on which the tree stands was once a farmstead. The arborist whom we engaged to care for it when we purchased our home in 1995 said it is approximately 130 years in age, which makes it young according to its species lifespan. We also have been told that it is in the top five largest of its kind in Virginia. There is talk that this tree was called the 'hanging tree.' Gallows Road is just down Annandale Road, which was named for the route the historic county courthouse and jail, relocated long ago. |
