Notes: The "Moon Tree" was planted in the school yard 30 years ago at Booker Elementary School, 160 Apollo Drive, Hampton, VA. An article appeared in the Daily Press, Wed., June 14, 2006 Newport News, VA paper. A wooden plaque states "Grown from a seed taken to the moon aboard Apollo 14 in 1971." A caption under a picture of students planting the seed in 1976 reads, "Two Booker Elementary students plant a sapling at the school 30 years ago. The school got the tree after a student won a poetry contest." Another caption under a picture of the tree reads, "2006: A sycamore tree - grown from seeds taken to the moon and back--was given to Booker Elementary School as a sapling in 1976. On Tuesday, students, parents, teachers and others gathered for the tree's rededication." |
